People considering hiring professional interior designers to help them undertake home improvement projects could save costs by making a series of small changes, one expert has said.

Speaking to the Baltimore Sun, president of the Maryland chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers Laura Kimball said those with less money after the recession are attempting to reduce the amount of cash they spend on redecorating their properties.

“Still, despite the economy, many consumers need the advice of professional interior designers,” she continued. “They just [might] want it without the full-service commitment”.

The specialist suggested homeowners hire help to decide colour schemes, furniture and other small projects to renovate their houses in phases.

However, Ms Kimball recommended individuals plan the finished product from the outset even if they are going to take a gradual approach when it comes to implementing their designs.

Those conducting DIY tasks to brighten up their homes on a budget were recently told by Kate Watson-Smyth, writing for the Independent, that updating a property can cost as little as £50.

One inexpensive way to decorate a home she advised is to apply fresh paint to the walls.
